The penultimate Green Conversation of 2025 is only days away. On Monday 20th October (usual time, usual place) we ask why do busy city-dwellers find it so hard to imagine a cleaner, healthier, car-free world, when many of the answers are within our grasp? We are delighted to host two fantastic speakers: Izzy Romilly of Possible and Priyanka Khurana of Fare Free London.
Izzy is the sustainable transport manager at Possible, a climate action charity. She’ll be covering Possible’s work on building support for traffic reduction, and the benefits of a fairer, greener transport system for everyone.
Priyanka reminds us that free travel is the norm in Luxemburg, Kansas City (USA) Brazil (130 cities), Tallinn (Estonia) & Dunkerque (France). She will discuss the Fare Free London campaign and explain how to set up a local group in your borough.
Most of us know that walking and cycling make us wealthier and healthier yet we find it hard to disobey the giant. The powerful automobile industry has normalised private car ownership by spending billions on car adverts and sponsoring motor racing and product placement in movies.
How can we turn the tide? Although many find public transport barely affordable, Londoners are luckier than those in remote villages. Cars are addictive. Owning a car is ‘normal’, even though it reduces community spirit.
How can we beat the vicious cycle of dependency? More cars mean more congestion and air pollution. But building more roads only encourages more cars and this makes public transport more expensive. Join us to hear from two organisations who know a lot about mending the situtation. Find out more about possible solutions, or even about setting up your own local group.
Please sign up to the event via the Eventbrite page and donate even a little if you can – it really helps us to be able to continue hosting these events. Look forward to seeing you there!
