On Monday 8th June the local St John’s book group, “Readers” were treated to a fascinating and truly energizing evening with local author, Rachel Blackmore (of Albyn road).

Rachel shared the inspiration for her debut novel Costanza which pivots the narrative about the artist Luigi Bernini, to instead focus much of the story on Costanza.

The novel explores the beauty of art, the incredible genius of Bernini and how he uses male power, privilege and the protection of the great and good to exert coercive control over Costanza, a humble-born but beautiful and passionate woman. Despite then falling from his favour and experiencing significant adversity, Costanza is supported by an unlikely sisterhood to retain her integrity and vibrant sense of self and become a highly successful influence in the art scene.

Hearing about the breadth and depth of research and the personal energy and inspiration which Rachel poured into Costanza was illuminating and shone a light on some of our own reflections about life, womanhood, contemporary norms about male/ female dynamics and so much more.

Book groups are such a great way of connecting, hearing others’ perspectives and bonding and having an author present really  is the icing on the cake!

If you know of another local author or book set locally our little club should be reading do get in touch via the St John’s Society who will share your message with us.
