Over the past two years the St Johns Society have been working with Street Trees for Living which has concluded during December 2024 with the planting of five new trees within SE8, with further plans for 2025/26.

Planted:

  1. 122 St Johns Vale
  2. 117 Albyn Road
  3. Opp 32 Strickland Street
  4. 43 Strickland Street
  5. 50 Ashmead Road

A sixth tree on the corner of Cranbrook and Clandon Street failed to be planted in this round due to utilities present on the site and will be allocated to the 2025 planting schedule and a new site found.

Additionally, another tree was planted on Albyn Road funded by a St John’s resident.  Thank you!

The planting of trees in an urban environment has so many benefits:

  • Trees filter pollutants like CO₂, NO₂, and SO₂, improving health by reducing harmful particles in the air.
  • Trees provide shade and release moisture, lowering temperatures in heat-absorbing cities.
  • Green spaces reduce stress, boost mental health, and encourage physical activity.
  • Tree roots absorb rainwater, decreasing runoff and improving water quality.
  • Trees offer habitats and food, promoting urban biodiversity.
  • Trees capture CO₂, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Trees improve aesthetics, reduce noise, and foster community pride.
  • Shade and windbreaks from trees cut cooling and heating costs.
  • Trees buffer extreme weather, making cities healthier and more sustainable.

In addition, and in collaboration with STfL, we are planning to plant with St Stephen’s Primary School in the New Year in the following locations:

  • 5 are on the streets directly outside the school building
  • 2 are inside the school grounds and
  • 1 is outside no. 88 Albyn Road
