A brief update on the remaining memorial apple tree on the St John’s Vale, SE8 roundabout. Due to the tree’s current condition and the very limited space in which it is growing, it will be removed as part of the forthcoming SuDS works, but the memorial itself will be retained and enhanced as part of the project.

What’s Happening

1.  Relocation of the Existing Tree
The one remaining apple tree will be relocated to a more suitable location, currently being discussed with the Lewisham Tree Officer. It will remain within St John’s and locations will be shared for your input.

2.  A Second Memorial Tree
A new tree shall also be planted, to replace the other original memorial tree that was sadly destroyed following a car crash during 2025.

3.  Remembrance Sunday Unveiling
The two memorial trees will be formally unveiled on Remembrance Sunday 2026, whereby serving personnel, veterans, councillors and the community shall be invited to attend, with several invited to say a few words.

4.  Memorial Plaque
A suitable memorial plaque shall be installed alongside the trees, so that the significance and history of the memorial is properly recognised.

This shall provide a much more appropriate and lasting setting for the memorial, while ensuring its connection to St John’s is maintained.
