A Vibrant New Artwork for St Johns

The St Johns Society is delighted to announce Ellen Rose as the artist selected to create  the Brookmill Rain Garden Mural. We’ve selected some details of the design to allow a sneak peek into this delightful new addition to the local landscape. The competition was organised to celebrate a new rain garden about to be installed in front of the Brookmill pub to replace the existing roundabout. You can find out more about this project here.

Supported by the Mayor of London Green Roots Fund, the competition sought designs that echoed the ambitions of the project to alleviate local surface water flooding, and provide much needed biodiversity and wildlife habitats.

The selected Design: Celebrating Local Flora

Ellen’s winning proposal brings an original, playful, and colourful aesthetic to the walls and gates of The Brookmill Pub. She took the time to research the plants that thrived at our first rain garden on Thornville Street (find out more here) and made them the centrepiece of her design. The plant names are intricately hand-lettered along the petals and leaves to create an educational and visually engaging piece for passersby.

Upcoming Installation at The Brookmill Pub

The mural will be painted on the walls and gates of The Brookmill Pub, directly facing Brookmill Road and Brookmill Park. Installation is scheduled to begin in mid-October 2026, ahead of the rain garden construction. Once complete, the artwork will serve as a welcome visual focal point for residents and visitors celebrating nature, sustainability, and community spirit in St Johns.
