Representatives from the St John’s Society attended today’s Healthy Neighbourhoods Concept Workshop as part of a Lewisham project supported by a London-wide engagement and traffic team. The workshop highlighted data gathered through community walkarounds, a facilitated cycle ride, a public survey, interactive mapping, and targeted traffic counts.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Safety Concerns for Cyclists: Thirteen locations were identified where vehicle volumes make routes unsuitable for cyclists, and all boundary roads exceed safe motor vehicle limits.
  • Pedestrian Challenges: High pedestrian counts in key areas signal a need to reduce motor vehicle capacity for safer walking conditions.
  • Collision Data: Forty-four collisions were recorded in the study area from 2019 to 2024.
  • Community Feedback: The survey attracted 175 responses, and the interactive map received 240 comments, with residents noting issues such as poor bin management, excessive traffic, a lack of crossings, and overall difficulty in safely navigating the area.

In response, the Healthy Neighbourhoods team has developed a series of proposal maps. These include traffic interventions—such as modal filters, safe crossing areas, and school streets—as well as complementary measures like seating, cycle stands, resurfacing, and greening improvements.  See the images below for detailed visual insights into these proposals.

The final consultation session to discuss these proposals is scheduled to be held at St John’s Church on Saturday, 29 March, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their feedback on the proposed changes.
