The St Johns Society and Friends of Friendly Gardens are excited to announce a comprehensive redesign plan aimed at revitalising this currently tired but cherished community space. This project was initiated by Alexandra Middleton the previous Chair of Friendly Gardens and developed in collaboration with the London school of garden design, local residents, local schools and councillors with a desire to enhance accessibility, sustainability, and recreational opportunities for all.
Key features of the redesign include upgraded walking paths, improved orientation of existing playground equipment and expanded green spaces for picnicking and community gatherings.
The plan also introduces a native plant garden to support local wildlife and biodiversity, along with new seating areas and shade structures to improve comfort for parkgoers. Additionally, the redesign prioritises accessibility, pathways and inclusive play structures to ensure that visitors of all abilities can enjoy the park.

Sustainability is a core focus of the project, with eco-friendly initiatives such as a rain garden for stormwater management and the use of recycled materials in park furnishings. Community input has played a crucial role in shaping the redesign, with feedback collected through public meetings and surveys helping to guide decisions on park features and amenities.
Friends of Friendly Gardens are actively seeking funding through grants, donations, and council support to bring this vision to life. Volunteers and local businesses will also play a key role in the park’s transformation, contributing resources and time to create a space that reflects the needs and values of the community.
With a focus on nature, inclusivity, and sustainability, the Friendly Gardens Park redesign promises to create a welcoming and vibrant outdoor destination for generations to come. Stay updated and get involved by contacting Paul @ chair@st-johns-soc.org.
