SUMMARY:Green Conversations - November 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us upstairs at the Brookmill\nIf you missed our last Green Conversations event – you should try to get to this one on 10th November at the Brookmill\, when three eminent speakers will present their expertise using graspable language. Young people are especially welcome. We all know about climate change and we hear of some amazing inventions that look promising. But will they really work? And how might local communities deal with this knowledge? As these questions raise complex issues\, we are fortunate to have this unique meeting of minds to help us find our own answers. This event is likely to attract many attendees\, so please book your (free/donation) places now\, to avoid disappointment. – link for free/donation tickets here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/ticketing/is-eco-science-working \nProf. Chris Ryan – WHAT HAPPENED TO ECODESIGN?\nSince the 1970s Chris watched as the global enthusiasm for sustainable design waxed and waned. He asks how can we regain our passion and our pioneering spirit? Professor Ryan has worked for over 30 years across various areas of science\, technology\, environmental policy and design\, and in projects that span the community sector\, academia\, government and international agencies and business. His community sector work includes the creation of a number of networks of ‘alternative’ and ‘radical’ technology in the UK in the 1970’s. As an academic he help found the first multi-disciplinary undergraduate socio-environmental degree program at RMIT University that spanned two faculties (Social Science and Architecture and Design). As Director of the National (Key) Centre for Environmental Design from (1989-98) he worked with 20 Australian companies to develop a new eco-design methodology and bring new greener products into the market. He has also collaborated with many eco-design related research groups in Europe\, including the Politecnico di Milano\, Italy\, the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands and the UK Design Council. His business work has involved projects or long term consulting for Schiavello (Australia); Transurban (Australia); Electrolux (Europe and Asia Pacific); Volvo Penta\, (Sweden); Brio (Sweden); Body Shop (Australasia); Blackmores (Australia); Isle Property Development Group (Australia). Professor Ryan was consultant to the UN Environment Program coordinating and writing the Global Progress Report on Sustainable Consumption for the Johannesburg UN world summit in 2002. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Industrial Ecology (Yale University) and a member of the Board of the Banksia Foundation Australia. He is joint editor of Design for Sustainability – a step by step guide; UN Environment Program Paris\, 2009. \nDaniel Ptacek – WILL CARBON CAPTURE SAVE US?\nMany of Daniel’s inventions involve de-carbonisation\, but will his enterprises reduce net carbon\, or will the promise of carbon capture be used to justify ‘drill baby drill’? Since 2000 Daniel has been leading decarbonisation technologies \, mostly in the built environment and mineralization\, at a time when global warming was barely acknowledged. From negative CO2 cement to direct flue gas carbon capture\, it became clear that moving away from fossil fuels in these hard-to-abate industries is an arduous journey. The most successful outcomes in carbon capture\, carbon abatement and weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels are ones that mimic nature. When the opportunity arose to start Aqua Botanika he did not hesitate; here at last was a product that is natural and therefore the ecological and regenerative benefits of its usage are immediate and plentiful. He is delighted that what he was taught as a young man in Maine\, USA about how to gather and use seaweed\, that this knowledge is finally proving of value. Daniel is a specialist in strategy\, guiding and assuring innovation\, IP\, new product development and corporate governance including P&L responsibility. He has been a business leader and innovator across many sectors\, delivering contracts on large capital projects including the Millennium Dome\, London; the Dynamic Earth Project\, Edinburgh; Glaxo’s Laboratories at Stevenage; and the world’s largest healthcare transformation in KSA. Daniel has a record of delivering contracts on time\, safely and on the money. \nProf. Phillip Jones – A ZERO-CARBON BUILT ENVIRONMENT?\nProfessor Phillip Jones will share his experiences as a building scientist. He will offer practical insights based on his design and research work for buildings at an individual and urban scale. He is Emeritus Professor of Architectural Science at the Welsh School of Architecture\, Cardiff University\, where from 2002 to 2013\, he was Head of School. His research and teaching are in the field of low energy\, low carbon\, and sustainable design in the built environment. He set up and chaired the Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI)\, an £80 million research program across six Welsh universities (2008 to 2015). He was appointed as distinguished visiting research professor at Hong Kong University (2015 – 2018)\, and is now a Visiting Professor\, and was international ‘Master Academic’ adviser on the Low Carbon Buildings ‘111’ project at Tianjin University. He chaired the Welsh Building Regulation Advisory Committee for 11 years (up to 2022) since its devolution to Wales. For some 20 years he has chaired Warm Wales\, a charity with 46 staff whose aim is to improve vulnerable householder’s well-being and reduce fuel poverty in Wales. He has worked as a consultant on a range of projects including energy positive housing\, green hospital design and zero energy offices. He is a partner in the Swiss based consultancy\, Jones Kopitsis AG\, in the field of environment design. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineering (FCIBSE) and a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.). In 1999\, he was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales\, and since 2007 has been a Fellow of the Institute of Welsh Affairs. He was awarded an OBE in the 2020 Queens New Years Honours list for services to Architecture and Decarbonisation.

SUMMARY:Green Conversations - October 2025
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a relaxed discussion upstairs at the Brookmill around a community-centred theme. This is another event in the successful series of Green Conversations hosted by the St Johns Society. On the 20th October experts from two organisations will offer a range of practical solutions about our transport systems. \nMost of us know that walking and cycling make us wealthier and healthier yet we find it hard to disobey the giant. The powerful automobile industry has normalised private car ownership by spending billions on car adverts and sponsoring motor racing and product placement in movies. \nHow can we turn the tide? Although many find public transport barely affordable\, Londoners are luckier than those in remote villages. Cars are addictive. Owning a car is ‘normal’\, even though it reduces community spirit. \nHow can we beat the vicious cycle of dependency? More cars mean more congestion and air pollution. But building more roads only encourages more cars and this makes public transport more expensive. Join us to hear from two organisations who know a lot about mending the situation. Find out more about possible solutions\, or even about setting up your own local group.

SUMMARY:St Johns Station Users Group – Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For people with any kind of mobility difficulty\, or if you’ve got a pushchair or heavy luggage\, the steep steps at St Johns are a big problem. \nIsn’t it time for a lift or ramp? What’s the point of public transport if the public can’t use it? \nYou might have other concerns about improving the station. \nA group of local people are holding a meeting to see what might be the priorities. That could include:\n• Step-free access\n• Feeling safe on the station\n• Improving lighting\n• Frequency and times of trains \nLocal MP Vicky Foxcroft will chair the meeting and you can tell her your views  about improving St Johns station.

SUMMARY:Front Garden Sale – across St John’s\, Brockley and Ladywell
DESCRIPTION:The annual Brockley front garden Fayre is on 13th and 14th of September 11am-4pm. We struggled to draw much of a crowd on Albyn and Ashmead last year so St John’s Society is planning to set up several stalls to act as a sort of hub in St John’s Garden behind the church to try and create an obvious place for people to pass by. You are welcome to register in the same place if you have a lot to sell and join a rota. Or set up your own! It is always a fun and friendly weekend. You need to write to chair@brockleysociety.org.uk with the day or both days you plan to host a sale and your address. If you want to join the hub then just put the address as “St John’s Garden”.

SUMMARY:A Study in Tragedy: the human cost of the 1957 St Johns Rail Disaster\, a talk by author Dr Tony Redding
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday December 4 1957 London and much of the South East was blanketed in a “pea-souper” smog. Driver Trew\, at the controls of the Battle of Britain class locomotive “Spitfire”\, ploughed into the back of a stationary electric train halted at St John’s station. The results were catastrophic. The impact collapsed the rail flyover\, bringing down hundreds of tonnes of steelwork and crushing the wrecked carriages of the Ramsgate express. \nHistorian and author Dr Tony Redding is nearing the completion of “A study in tragedy”\, a book which documents the horror of that night and its long term effects on victims and their families. \nTony’s talk will focus the human consequences. He will also remember his Father\, Jack Redding\, who was amongst the rescuers that night. Jack was a British Railways welder. He used cutting gear to free the injured and recover bodies in the wreckage under the collapsed bridge. \nAll proceeds to go to the St John’s Memorial Plaque Fund. \nTickets £3\, available here – https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-study-in-tragedy-the-human-cost-of-the-1957-st-johns-rail-disaster-tickets-1361403868619?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Green Conversations - May 2025 (Our Future Commons\, with GND Rising and Badvertising)
DESCRIPTION:We are gearing up for our next talk in this year’s series of Green Conversations – as always at the upstairs room at The Brookmill pub\, starting at 7:30pm on Monday 19th May.  We are thrilled to welcome James Ward of Badvertising travelling all the way across from Bristol\, and Hannah Martin\, Founding Director of Green New Deal Rising.  We’re really looking forward to hearing how their work challenges government policies on fossil fuels\, pollution and the climate crisis.  A little more about the talks themselves and the speakers themselves: \nCarmageddon: challenging SUVs for a politics beyond the private motor vehicle\, James Ward \nTransport is always about more than getting from A to B\, it lies at the heart of our politics and our culture. The surging use of SUVs now presents a choice: do we follow a US model towards total carmageddon\, or do we u-turn towards an alternative future? In this talk\, James will examine the SUV as the epitome of car dominance\, how advertising has reinvented vehicles invented for military use as suitable for school runs and shopping trips\, and the policy failures that have enabled this shift. \nJames works at Adfree Cities where his work focuses on greenwash in car advertising. He has a background in journalism and activism\, and has been involved in many campaigns for a safer and less polluted public realm in his hometown of Bristol. \nHannah Martin is an organiser and campaigner. She has campaigned with Greenpeace UK leading their energy and climate team and ran campaigns and actions as part of the successful UK anti fracking movement. In 2019 she helped the UK Student Climate Network and the Youth Strikes for Climate to mobilise\, including towards the September Climate Strikes which was the biggest climate protest in UK history and led to the passing of new net zero legislation that year. In 2020 she founded Green New Deal Rising with Fatima Ibrahim. Since then\, they have trained and organised thousands of young people to act on climate\, elected several green champions to Parliament and changed the narrative around how green policy can build a stronger economy. She is an Obama Leader in Europe and before working as a campaigner\, she had a career in the children’s services sector\, helped found a successful social enterprise in Oxford and set up a community festival in her home city of Wakefield. \nGreen New Deal Rising is a movement of young people from every part of the UK\, and on a mission to take power out of the hands of the billionaires and the oil executives\, and put it in the hands of our generation. We’re fighting for the green new deal – a game-changing plan to transform the economy and tackle climate change at the speed and scale that is needed.  Hannah will talk about the following: \n\nUnderstanding climate justice: Exploring the principles of climate justice and the necessity of addressing both environmental sustainability and social equity.\nThe UK political landscape: Examining current UK climate policies\, recent governmental shifts\, and the key players influencing climate action.\n\nEffective advocacy strategies: Learning from Green New Deal Rising’s initiatives\, including their recent efforts to counteract governmental climate policy reversals and their call to action for public participation.\n\n\nWe hope you can join us and hear what Hannah and James have to say.  It helps us greatly if you can sign up to the event on Eventbrite – please follow this link for your free tickets!   \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Green Conversations\, April 2025 - Common Ground?
DESCRIPTION:Welcome: Can we find Common Ground?\nIn April’s instalment of this year’s Green Conversation series\, we will be exploring themes of biodiversity\, flood resilience and freedom through the lens of front gardens and continuing this year’s theme of ‘The Commons’. We are delighted to announce three amazing speakers who will bring their own angle to the topic and generate a discussion. We look forward to welcoming you at the Brookmill(4 minutes walk from St Johns Stationand 8 minutes walk from Elverson Road DLR station. \nFreedom to Roam (with Joanna Jones)\n\nPlaygrounds of the imagination\n\nJoanna is a British artist who co-founded the London studio collective in 1973. After settling in Dover in 1997 she set up The Dover Arts Development (DAD) in 2006 with Claire Smith. Their organisation continues to nurture a formidable local artistic community. Joanna also enjoys Dover’s sprawling landscape and apparent lack of boundaries. These experiences have led her to realise the important connection between our internal and external realities. “How can we shape the innovations for a better future”\, she asks\, “if we can’t roam freely across the lands and in our imaginations?” \nSpongey Neighbourhoods (with Marcus Gayle)\n\nFlood resilience for St Johns\n\nMarcus has worked in the public sector for numerous years\, delivering innovative nature-based flood resilience schemes. He is a civil engineering and a Chartered water and environmental manager with extensive experience working with communities to implement nature-based adaptation. His work is driven by a commitment to creating resilient and environmentally friendly infrastructure for the communities he serves. \nGifts to the Street (with Create Streets)\n\nHow better homes and gardens can create better streets\n\nCreate Streets is a London-based social enterprise that works alongside its charitable arm\, the Create Streets Foundation\, to make it easier to develop and steward places that are popular\, sustainable\, beautiful\, healthy\, and prosperous. They advocate for fine grained\, street-based urbanism\, and for greater community input into the design and creation of new places. They work ‘bottom up’\, working with community groups\, councils\, and landowners\, and ‘top down’\, developing policy and advocating for planning reform. They will introduce their research into the links between the built environment and our health\, happiness\, wellbeing\, and prosperity\, and then delve into some ideas for how we can unlock the potential of St Johns through making better use of our roofs and front gardens.

SUMMARY:Green Talks - March 2025
DESCRIPTION:Reclaiming The Commons\nJoin us at The Brookmill to meet up with neighbours\, pioneers and international experts. Our shared resources are all around us so we easily forget their potential. The idea of The Commons’ originally meant ‘common land’ but by applying it to any shared resource or asset we may find new benefits for local communities. Our last event explored the idea of the ‘Energy Commons’. Most of us are so focused on energy bills that we can easily forget that sunshine is the free fuel that will last a billion years at least! This next session will think about biodiversity as another type of ‘Commons’. \n\n\n\n\nFirst Speaker: DUSTY GEDGE\nis a local man who pioneered the use of green roofs as a way to introduce more biodiversity across large built-up areas. By recognising the potential for ‘grey roofs’ within the construction industry he inspired changes that are now mainstream in London. Today\, Dusty is in demand around the world. His early passion for birds and other wildlife continues to drive his award-winning activities – from consultancy to photography. Originally trained as a performer\, Dusty is also a renowned public speaker. \nSecond Speaker: SUBO JAMES\nSubo is a community activist who lives near St Johns (SE14 is a mere stone’s throw from SE8). She chairs the Florence Road Residents Group where she inspires members to promote\, protect and enhance the quality of life. Florence Road is home to many residents already struggling with financial health difficulties and it is classed as a ‘Very High Pollution’ area. One way to mitigate poor air quality is to encourage a greater diversity of species. Increasing urban biodiversity also gives cities a chance to become more climate resilient. Although tiny rooftops or neglected spaces may seem insignificant\, together they constitute an important aspect of the ‘commons’. \nThird speaker: JEFF M\nJeff is part of an organisation called ‘Connecting the Commons’ and is currently exploring the collective potential of urban front gardens. Seen from a real estate perspective\, front gardens are private spaces that we use to express our personalities to the neighbourhood. For other living creatures\, however\, they are part of a much larger ‘Commons’ that nourishes them. Unfortunately\, a third of front gardens in the UK (around five million) are devoid of plants. A quarter are completely covered by paving slabs\, tarmac or concrete. This helps to explain why our global biodiversity ratings are near the bottom of the league tables and why flooding will cause more damage in the future. However\, we can ensure that we help more species to colonise large urban spaces by cultivating marginal pockets of land or by installing green roofs. This is not just a positive practical initiative. It is also a fantastic analogy for bringing about a diversity-of-diversities.

SUMMARY:Green Conversations - January 2025\, The Energy Commons
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Commons \nQ: How do you envisage the future?: \na) as healthier\, fairer\, local lifestyles?\nb) increasingly unaffordable housing and energy bills? \nAt present the global energy markets and financial industries shape our lives. We are hostages to price-hikes and changes in government policy. Imagine that your local community was self-sufficient in off-grid clean power….would you prefer to sell energy surpluses to the government\, or to set up local trading partnerships with neighbours? This event will explore possible synergies between energy and money. \nOur special guests from ISLAND POWER will explain their radical business models that can put communities into the driving seat. Whether you want to learn more about currency systems\, renewable energy or innovative legal frameworks our special GREEN CONVERSATIONS event at the Brookmill will engage and fascinate you. \nIsland Power Solutions develops tailor-made solutions for off-grid systems combining green energy production and storage. They work with partners and local communities to help islands to use their own resources to generate cleaner and reliable energy. What makes them global pioneers is their revolutionary legal framework and business structure that puts community before shareholders or managers. Once their approach is vindicated by heir radical framework could inspire a new paradigm in which energy is the prime currency. National economies are sometimes hide-bound by legal orthodoxies and outmoded assumptions\, Island Power is bench testing its innovative products in tiny economies eager for sensible innovation.
