SUMMARY:Green Conversations\, April 2025 - Common Ground?
DESCRIPTION:Welcome: Can we find Common Ground?\nIn April’s instalment of this year’s Green Conversation series\, we will be exploring themes of biodiversity\, flood resilience and freedom through the lens of front gardens and continuing this year’s theme of ‘The Commons’. We are delighted to announce three amazing speakers who will bring their own angle to the topic and generate a discussion. We look forward to welcoming you at the Brookmill(4 minutes walk from St Johns Stationand 8 minutes walk from Elverson Road DLR station. \nFreedom to Roam (with Joanna Jones)\n\nPlaygrounds of the imagination\n\nJoanna is a British artist who co-founded the London studio collective in 1973. After settling in Dover in 1997 she set up The Dover Arts Development (DAD) in 2006 with Claire Smith. Their organisation continues to nurture a formidable local artistic community. Joanna also enjoys Dover’s sprawling landscape and apparent lack of boundaries. These experiences have led her to realise the important connection between our internal and external realities. “How can we shape the innovations for a better future”\, she asks\, “if we can’t roam freely across the lands and in our imaginations?” \nSpongey Neighbourhoods (with Marcus Gayle)\n\nFlood resilience for St Johns\n\nMarcus has worked in the public sector for numerous years\, delivering innovative nature-based flood resilience schemes. He is a civil engineering and a Chartered water and environmental manager with extensive experience working with communities to implement nature-based adaptation. His work is driven by a commitment to creating resilient and environmentally friendly infrastructure for the communities he serves. \nGifts to the Street (with Create Streets)\n\nHow better homes and gardens can create better streets\n\nCreate Streets is a London-based social enterprise that works alongside its charitable arm\, the Create Streets Foundation\, to make it easier to develop and steward places that are popular\, sustainable\, beautiful\, healthy\, and prosperous. They advocate for fine grained\, street-based urbanism\, and for greater community input into the design and creation of new places. They work ‘bottom up’\, working with community groups\, councils\, and landowners\, and ‘top down’\, developing policy and advocating for planning reform. They will introduce their research into the links between the built environment and our health\, happiness\, wellbeing\, and prosperity\, and then delve into some ideas for how we can unlock the potential of St Johns through making better use of our roofs and front gardens.

SUMMARY:Green Talks - March 2025
DESCRIPTION:Reclaiming The Commons\nJoin us at The Brookmill to meet up with neighbours\, pioneers and international experts. Our shared resources are all around us so we easily forget their potential. The idea of The Commons’ originally meant ‘common land’ but by applying it to any shared resource or asset we may find new benefits for local communities. Our last event explored the idea of the ‘Energy Commons’. Most of us are so focused on energy bills that we can easily forget that sunshine is the free fuel that will last a billion years at least! This next session will think about biodiversity as another type of ‘Commons’. \n\n\n\n\nFirst Speaker: DUSTY GEDGE\nis a local man who pioneered the use of green roofs as a way to introduce more biodiversity across large built-up areas. By recognising the potential for ‘grey roofs’ within the construction industry he inspired changes that are now mainstream in London. Today\, Dusty is in demand around the world. His early passion for birds and other wildlife continues to drive his award-winning activities – from consultancy to photography. Originally trained as a performer\, Dusty is also a renowned public speaker. \nSecond Speaker: SUBO JAMES\nSubo is a community activist who lives near St Johns (SE14 is a mere stone’s throw from SE8). She chairs the Florence Road Residents Group where she inspires members to promote\, protect and enhance the quality of life. Florence Road is home to many residents already struggling with financial health difficulties and it is classed as a ‘Very High Pollution’ area. One way to mitigate poor air quality is to encourage a greater diversity of species. Increasing urban biodiversity also gives cities a chance to become more climate resilient. Although tiny rooftops or neglected spaces may seem insignificant\, together they constitute an important aspect of the ‘commons’. \nThird speaker: JEFF M\nJeff is part of an organisation called ‘Connecting the Commons’ and is currently exploring the collective potential of urban front gardens. Seen from a real estate perspective\, front gardens are private spaces that we use to express our personalities to the neighbourhood. For other living creatures\, however\, they are part of a much larger ‘Commons’ that nourishes them. Unfortunately\, a third of front gardens in the UK (around five million) are devoid of plants. A quarter are completely covered by paving slabs\, tarmac or concrete. This helps to explain why our global biodiversity ratings are near the bottom of the league tables and why flooding will cause more damage in the future. However\, we can ensure that we help more species to colonise large urban spaces by cultivating marginal pockets of land or by installing green roofs. This is not just a positive practical initiative. It is also a fantastic analogy for bringing about a diversity-of-diversities.
